Who is Hollywood Lights?

What have we been up to... 1948 to now?!

Mr. Cameron, a Los Angeles native, had a bright idea that lit up Portland – literally! Inspired by Hollywood glamour, he came to Portland with little more that searchlights, and a dream! He launched Hollywood Lights, turning searchlights into the stars of the advertising scene. What started as a trend in LA soon dazzled Portland, with businesses using searchlights to illuminate grand openings and car shows.

As the ’50s rolled on, Hollywood Lights found its niche in theatrical and trade show lighting. The opening of Portland’s Memorial Coliseum in the ’60s was a spotlight moment, drawing more events needing their expertise.

But by the early ’60s, searchlight advertising dimmed, prompting Hollywood Lights to pivot. They sold off the searchlights and focused on electrical contracting, convention and trade show electrical services, a move that lit up their path to success.

In the disco-fueled late ’70s, Hollywood Lights found a new groove. Disco balls may have faded, but the demand for lighting equipment in entertainment venues shone brighter than ever. They expanded their offerings, becoming a beacon for theatrical, entertainment, and special events sales and rentals across the Northwest.

The ’60s also saw Hollywood Lights make its TV debut, lighting up political campaigns. In ’90, they launched Pacific Grip & Lighting for Portland’s film industry, later expanding to Seattle. Though Pacific Grip was sold in ’98, their legacy remains strong.

In ’95, Hollywood Lights acquired Superior Stage Lighting, followed by a Seattle office in ’96. Their production lighting department in Seattle, established in 2002, was a blockbuster success.

For over seven decades, Hollywood Lights has shined bright, dedicated to exceptional service and top-notch equipment. Proudly independent and locally owned, they continue to illuminate the Pacific Northwest, living up to their mission with every watt of energy.
